Manila Churches

June 10, 2009

Christianity is the major religion in the Philippines. It was brought by the Spaniards when they invade the Philippines many years ago. Most of the churches in the Philippines particularly in Metro Manila are ones that had been built in the Spaniards era. These churches have been influenced by baroque style. Most of the churches has been preserved over the years and some of them where reconstructed due to the different calamities that affected their structure.

Some of the well known churches in the metro is the Manila Cathedral, it is located inside the “Walled City” or known as the Intramuros . Most of the weddings were held here especially those who belong to the well known family or celebrity in the metropolis. The church is dedicated to Saint Mary under the title of “Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception“, in her role as patroness of the Philippines.

Malate Church  is located in Malate, Manila along the Roxas Boulevard, it faces a small park which is the Rajah Sulayman and the Manila Bay. It’s is a Baroque style church that was originally built in sixteenth century by the Augustinians. The church is dedicated to “Nuestra Senora de Remedios” (”Our Lady of Remedies”), the patroness of childbirth.

San Agustine  Church is the oldest church in the Philippines, it is also located inside the “Walled City” which is the Intramuros.  The Baroque touches can be most seen around the church, from its crave wooden door to its ceiling. The church also contains them tomb of Spaniards conquistadors Miguel Lopez de Legazpi, Juan Salcedo, and  Martin de Goiti, and also some of the early Spaniard Governors- General and Archbishops. The church also hosts an image of “Our Lady of Consolation (Nuestra Senora de Consolacion y Correa)”.

Quiapo Church is officially known as the Minor Basilica of San Lorenzo Ruiz, it is located in the District of Quiapo , Manila. The church is well known across the country for it is the home of the “Black  Nazarene”, it is the venerated statue of Jesus Christ because most of the Filipino believe that  it has miraculous attribute. Every 9th of January the devotees gathered in Quiapo to join the yearly procession of the Black Nazarene, many sick people come to the place to pray for their health.

Manila has lot o infratructrures taht have been preserved for many years, fro the reason that MAnila has been the capital of the Spaniards during their invation in the Philippines. some of he historical places can also be seen at http://ww.manilatd.com.

Philippine Independence Day

Every year Filipino celebrates its Independence day every 12th of June.  I remember when I was young I was so happy hearing that its already Independence day, the reason was not about I’m happy because I’m joining them celebrating the true spirit of the celebration. But the true reason was that I’m glad and so with my cousins because we have  no classes during that day.  It was a national holiday. So we have the other day to extend our vacation at school.

As I grew up and start to learn lot of things at school I have learned the true essence of celebrating the Independence day. I have learned how the Filipino soldiers fight for our freedom. How they sacrifice their own life, for us to live now as a freemen. Today, as I heard the national anthem I become so emotional. Imagining how my forefathers fought for the freedom of our country. And so with our heroes. What I want to see is how this celebrated in the Luneta Park in Manila. this is where our  national hero, Jose Rizal was shot by the Spaniards.very year the President of the country and some of the leaders gathered at the place to lead the flag raising ceremony.

For the month of June there will be lot of  celebration in Metro Manila, not only celebrating the Independence day but also feast, you can check some of this schedule at www.manilatd.com
